All About the Ocean Club
Long Beach offers one of the more unique coastal views in all of California. As a city you will find that it has embraced high rises along Ocean Boulevard to allow residents to soak in sweeping ocean views that can stretch from Catalina to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Unless you travel to San Diego or San Francisco you won’t find another city that embraces high rises along the water’s edge like Long Beach.
Besides the early development in the late 1920’s for high rise development there was a lull of new buildings in Long Beach for quite some time, that is until the early 1980’s. In the early 1980’s developers had the opportunity to once again build striking buildings that would have a commanding presence and stand for years to come. The Ocean Club is one of those buildings that sparked a resurgence in high rise development in Long Beach as it was built in 1984. The Ocean Club is located in close proximity (about ½ of a mile) to one of the original high rises in Long Beach, the Villa Riviera which means it is in good company along Ocean Boulevard.
The condos at the Ocean Club come in a variety of sizes and configurations:
- One-Bedroom Condos: The one bedroom units can range in size from ~990 sq ft to ~1,100 sq ft
- Two-Bedroom Condos: The two bedroom units can range in size from ~1,290 sq ft to ~1,540 sq ft with a select view exceeding 2,000 sq ft
- Three-Bedroom Condos: At the Penthouse level you will find a 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom property that is over 3,000 sq ft in size.
If you are looking at the Ocean Club from Ocean boulevard you don’t necessarily get to enjoy the full scale of the 16 floors and 201 ft in height. One of the most striking views to take in is looking at the building from Alamitos Beach, which you are just steps away from when you are a resident here. The innovative design provides for units that extend below ocean boulevard allowing for a unique perspective of the beach and the ocean.
When a condo at the Ocean Club comes up for sale you will want to look at it on its own merit as many have been extensively upgraded over the years. With that being said you will find a common theme among the floorplans:
- Expansive living and dining areas ideal for entertaining
- Fully equipped kitchens that can often feature premium appliances such as Gaggenau, Miele and more.
- Master bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and walk-in closets
- Secondary bedrooms (on select floor plans) with ample closet space
- Private balconies with stunning panoramic views. In select units you can even enjoy the bene
- In-unit laundry, even allowing for side by side laundry units which is certainly rare among condos in Long Beach
Lighting in condos is a consideration and the Ocean Club layout does a great job of inviting in natural light from the floor to ceiling windows as well as the usage of can lights. The floor plans easily allow you to enjoy the condo while inviting you to soak in the views from the easily accessible balconies. Taking the time to explore a condo when it becomes available for sale is essential as there are units that have north facing views, which provide a striking view of the city, but if you want to view the ocean you will want a condo on the south side.
Amenities at the Ocean Club
The Ocean Club is what is known as a full service building. In essence it almost feels like living in a 5-star hotel year round. When you are an owner here you will be able to enjoy the following:
- Security and Concierge Services: 24-hour security and concierge services ensure the safety and convenience of residents, providing peace of mind and personalized assistance.
- Fitness Center: No need to worry about a commute to the gym when you can enjoy one in your own building. You will find a state-of-the-art fitness center equipped with a variety of cardio options, the latest exercise machines and free weights.
- Swimming Pool and Spa: The outdoor pool and spa area are truly akin to a fine resort. The pool is large and in somewhat of an “L” shape allowing you to enjoy the cool water while gazing out to the ocean. Should you get tired of pool time the hot tub is just steps away and also provides a great view of the Pacific Ocean. The sweepingly large deck area is complete with lounge chairs and three BBQs allowing you to spend many enjoyable hours outdoors.
- Storage: In front of assigned parking spots you will also find storage lockers allowing you a convenient way to store those items that you don’t want to clutter up your clean condo space.
Recreation Room: There is a recreation room at the south end of the building where you can relax with an ocean view while playing pool or simply sit and relax. - Sauna: Embodying the resort style living you also have the opportunity to relax in a sauna.
- Rentable Guest Suite: When you have guests over from out of town you might want to give them a taste of what you get to enjoy daily. At the Ocean Club there is a rentable guest suite for overnight guests.
- Direct Beach Access: The view that you see from your unit is easily accessible with the development providing direct beach access to Alamitos Beach. Alamitos Beach provides an excellent path for walking/running and even cycling. There is often enough wind, and ample room, to enjoy kite flying as well.
With this array of amenities to enjoy it is no wonder this condo development on Ocean Boulevard continues to be popular.
The Architects of the Ocean Club
The architecture firm behind the Ocean club was known as RTKL in 1984 when it was built. RTKL was an abbreviation for the four original partners that helped develop the firm from its initial founding in 1946.
- Archibald C. Rogers – Archibald is a Princeton educated architect who founded the firm in 1946 in his grandmother’s basement. He founded his firm in Baltimore, Maryland. His firm designed many projects from redevelopment plans to downtown plans that include cities such as Cincinnati, Jacksonville and much more. These early projects certainly paved the way for the eventual design of the Ocean Club.
- Francis T. Taliaferro – Francis joined Archibald in the founding year and they built the firm together over the next few years before hiring, who would eventually become a partner, named Chris Lamb.
- Chris Lamb – Chris joined the firm in 1949 and a design he did for the Girl Scouts, known as the Teepee Lodge helped the firm to gain national attention. With his early contributions to the firm and ongoing work he was made a partner in1956 and the name of the firm was changed to “Rogers, Taliaferro and Lamb”.
- George Kotstrisky – By 1961 the firm was continuing to expand its expertise and to develop a broader depth of experience they hired George. His expertise was in urban planning and helped the firm to tackle redevelopment projects. His pioneering vision extended beyond architecture as part of RKTL, George submitted patent applications for a streetlamp and its luminaire for the Charles Center and those are still in use over 50 years later.
RTKL, now known as CallisonRTKL, has expanded to become a global architecture, planning and design firm. While the original founding partners have passed on, their pioneering vision helped create the Ocean Club. The firm’s influence today still has an impact on the Los Angeles area skyline through such projects as LA Live and the Four Seasons Los Angeles Private Residences.

Architectural Style: Contemporary
The Ocean Club in Long Beach is a prime example of contemporary architectural design, reflecting a blend of modernist principles and coastal influences. When you first gaze upon the tower, you not only notice a commanding presence on Ocean Boulevard it becomes apparent that the design is one that allows its residents to enjoy the nearly year round great weather and some of the best views in all of Southern California.
As a style, contemporary architecture is one that embodies influences from other styles such as modernism, minimalism and eco-friendly design. This blend of styles helps to create a finished product that embraces both simplicity and functionality. As you look at the Ocean Club a few key characteristics of contemporary architecture that are apparent include:
- Simplicity and Clean Lines: Contemporary architecture favors clean, unadorned lines and simple geometric forms. This emphasis on simplicity creates a sense of order and clarity, allowing the structure to speak for itself without excessive ornamentation. The clean lines are very apparent at the Ocean Club from the shape of the tower to the shape of the balconies.
- Innovative Use of Materials: Contemporary buildings often employ a diverse range of materials, including glass, steel, concrete, and sustainable alternatives. These materials are used creatively to achieve both aesthetic and functional goals, such as maximizing natural light or enhancing energy efficiency. Effective use of structural steel allows the Ocean Club to not only embrace materials that are common to a contemporary style, but also provides for two other important characteristics: integration with nature and open floor plans.
- Integration with Nature: A hallmark of contemporary design is its integration with the natural environment. This can be seen at the Ocean Club through the use of large floor to ceiling windows to bring in natural light and outdoor living spaces that blur the line between indoor and outdoor areas. You will also notice, when viewed from Alamitos Beach, that the building appears to seamlessly blend into the landscape from its coloring, direct beach access, and position on the lot.
- Open Floor Plans: Interior spaces in contemporary architecture are typically open and flexible, designed to promote a sense of flow and connectivity and you will certainly find that is the case for units in this building. When you open the door to a unit you will find the open-plan concept provides for a view nearly immediately to the Ocean (when you are on the south side of the building) and it draws you into the balcony. This open-plan concept enhances the functionality of the space and allows for greater adaptability to the needs of the occupants.
One element of a well designed contemporary building is does it stand the test of time? In the case of the Ocean Club it’s distinct lines, large balconies, and floor to ceiling windows are truly timeless elements that allow this building to remain relevant 40 years after its initial construction.
Innovations in Construction and Historical Significance in 1984
When you are looking at a condo in Long Beach, whether it is a historical condo, one on Ocean Boulevard, or even a new development it helps to understand if there are any innovations that are incorporated or even if historical events influenced aspects of the development. In the case of the Ocean Club, 1984 was a pretty big year in terms of construction as well as historical events.
High-Strength Concrete
With the continued goal of developing high-rises, and the awareness of the need for greater strength due to earthquakes, the construction industry continued its path of innovation in 1984. In 1984, the development and use of high-strength concrete began to gain traction. High-strength concrete is characterized by its compressive strength, which is significantly higher than that of traditional concrete. This innovation allowed for the construction of taller and more resilient structures, contributing to advancements in skyscraper design and infrastructure projects.
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Advances
While in the early days of architecture, everything was done by hand, the increase in productivity of computers by the 1980’s made CAD more accessible to help with the design elements of a given building. 1984 marked significant advancements in computer-aided design (CAD) technology, which transformed the construction industry. Enhanced CAD software enabled architects and engineers to create more detailed and accurate building designs. This innovation facilitated better planning, reduced errors, and streamlined the construction process.
Apple’s Macintosh Launch
Innovations in computer technology helped in the industry of construction and how mainstream consumers viewed the world. Apple Inc. introduced the Macintosh computer on January 24, 1984. This event is particularly significant as the Macintosh was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a graphical user interface and a mouse, revolutionizing personal computing.
Los Angeles Summer Olympics
Is it possible that the developers behind the Ocean Club wanted the building to be available for sale in 1984, in part, due to the popularity of the Olympics in the area? In Long Beach Fencing and Volleyball were nearby the Ocean Club at the Exhibit Hall at the Long Beach Convention Center which would make it easily accessible to any resident in Downtown Long Beach.
The Ocean Club is a wonderful example of how innovations in construction and even historical events can influence a development. This striking development certainly has made the most of high-strength concrete and while the Olympics won’t be in the greater Los Angeles area until 2028, you still will have the opportunity to have easy access to a variety of events throughout all of Long Beach.
